Getting started

Who is this offer for?

If you live in the UK

I offer psychotherapy and counselling, delivered online across the UK.

If you live in Germany or elsewhere in the EU

I offer a separate psychological counselling and coaching service, rather than psychotherapy. For most psychotherapists, an initial assessment requires in-person contact; practice varies by chamber. Since I am not able to offer in-person contact, I offer coaching and psychological counselling instead. You can find out more about each offer via the “Services” menu above.

What happens in the free 15-minute call?

It is a short, no-obligation conversation where we talk through what is bringing you here and check whether we are a good fit. No commitment, no charge.

During sessions

Is an online format right for me?

In the UK

In many cases, yes. Online delivery is a well-established format for CBT-based approaches, and in my experience it works well for many of the issues I work with. Whether it suits your situation is something we clarify in the free 15-minute call. The main exception is complex trauma involving dissociation or self-harm, where in-person support is usually more appropriate. We will discuss this openly together if it is relevant to you. And if I notice at any point that the online format is not serving you well, I will raise that with you openly too.

In Germany / EU

In many cases, yes. Counselling by video is a well-established format, and in my experience it works well for many concerns. Whether it suits yours is something we clarify in the free 15-minute call. If it becomes clear that you need more than counselling, I will tell you so openly and help you look for support locally.

How long does a session last?

Individual sessions are 50 minutes. Couples sessions (UK only) are 75 minutes.

How do the online sessions work?

We meet by video via WriteUpp, a practice platform built for therapists. All you need is a device with a camera and microphone, a stable internet connection and a quiet room where you can talk undisturbed.

How confidential are online sessions?

The video sessions are end-to-end encrypted. WriteUpp is ISO 27001 certified and stores data within the EU. Sessions are as confidential as they would be in a practice room; the Privacy Notice explains where the limits of confidentiality lie.

How many sessions will I need?

This varies a lot depending on what you are going through and what you would like to work on. Some people find real change with just a handful of sessions; others benefit from longer, ongoing work. We will discuss a rough plan together early on, and revisit it as we go.

What is the difference between counselling and psychotherapy?

In the UK

These terms overlap significantly in both training and practice. BACP describes both as umbrella terms that cover a range of talking therapies. I am trained and qualified to offer both.

In Germany / EU

This distinction is legally meaningful. Psychotherapy is a protected, regulated form of medical treatment, and its initial assessment usually requires in-person contact. For clients based there, I offer counselling and coaching instead: closely related in approach, but not a substitute for psychotherapy or medical treatment.

Do you diagnose conditions?

In the UK

I carry out a clinical assessment as part of therapy, and will share my diagnostic evaluation with you as part of our work together. However, I don’t provide formal diagnoses for official purposes — for example, insurance claims, benefits, or ADHD assessments — as that typically requires a different, specific qualification pathway.

In Germany / EU

No diagnosis is made as part of this offer. Should it become apparent that a clinically significant condition is present, I will discuss this openly with you and help you find suitable support close to home.

Practical & fees

How much does a session cost?

In the UK

An individual session (50 minutes) costs £65, a couples session (75 minutes) £90. The 15-minute introductory call beforehand is free.

In Germany / EU

A counselling session (50 minutes) costs €120, invoiced privately. Here too, the 15-minute introductory call is free.

Will my health insurance cover the cost?

In the UK

Some private health insurers do reimburse psychotherapy sessions. Please check directly with your provider before your first session, as this varies by policy.

In Germany / EU

As this is a counselling and coaching offer rather than psychotherapy, it is generally not reimbursable through German statutory or private health insurance in the way psychotherapy is.

What is your cancellation policy?

I operate a 24-hour cancellation policy. If you cancel more than 24 hours in advance, there is no charge. Cancellations within 24 hours, or missed appointments, are charged in full, except in genuine emergencies.

Are sessions arranged in UK or German time?

I work from Cornwall, so on UK time. Germany and most other EU countries are one hour ahead: a session at 10 am UK time starts at 11 am in Germany.

Can I also see you in person in Cornwall?

At the moment, all sessions take place online by video. I work from Falmouth in Cornwall and am planning to offer in-person sessions there in the future (Falmouth/Penryn) – for people living in the UK.

What if I am in a crisis right now?

This website and my practice are not an emergency service. If you are in a crisis, please contact emergency services immediately: 999 in the UK, 112 in Germany and the EU. Or a crisis line: Samaritans 116 123 (UK), Telefonseelsorge 0800 111 0 111 and the medical on-call service 116 117 (Germany).
